POVERTY and HUNGER





















People cannot move out of poverty if their basic needs for nutrition, shelter, healthcare, economic and other supports are not being met. According to Social Weather Station, 14.3% of Filipinos had had less food than they needed. In 2001 it was “only” 11.4%. That’s some 13 million Filipinos who go hungry. Unemployment has risen, from 11.4% to 11.7%.

Gov’t to borrow $ 900 M this year “Recent surveys indicate that more Filipinos are suffering from hunger . The World bank said despite two years of economic growth, surveys showed that 17 percent of the population reported hunger compared to 12 percent last year and over 49 percent considered themselves impoverished compared to 48 percent in 2005." In February, the Philippines budget deficit was P25 billion World Bank said.
